When Mary Watters conceived the idea of a beach towel, tote bag and chair cover all in one during a trip to Hawaii, it sparked the launch of her company, Beachables.
“From the inception of the Beachables concept, we determined that we would use our business to make a positive difference in people’s lives,” Watters says.
As the business grew she knew she had to expand into a bigger space than her garage apartment and employ stitchers to keep up with demand. She also expanded the line to include apparel. The first Beachables gift shop opened in Charleston, South Carolina, in August 2019.
"I think as a retailer/business it is incumbent on us to serve the communities that support us and to endeavor to make the world a better place for everyone.” — Mary Watters
Fundraising fun. Beachables has made a positive difference in people’s lives both near and far. One of the first organizations it has supported financially is Water Mission, a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation and hygiene solutions in developing countries and disaster areas.
Closer to home, the Down Syndrome Association of Lowcountry is a cause that is near and dear to Watters and her husband, Dan.
“Our 13-year-old son, Carson, was born with Down Syndrome. This organization and others like it provide an invaluable service to families and individuals by organizing social events, providing educational opportunities and we all get information and support for families when they receive a DS diagnosis. We enjoy participating and contributing to support the annual Buddy Walk and other events through financial and product contributions.”
Expanding reach. Watters describes the JOYCharleston fundraiser as Beachables’ “most challenging and rewarding undertaking.” The company coordinated efforts with a local church to raise funds and provide 600 hot meals to homeless and underserved families in need on Christmas Day.
“Opportunities to contribute are often our response to direct requests, and we are happy to contribute where we can,” says Watters. “It is our hope that a hot meal on a very cold Christmas Day brought a little joy to those we were able to reach.”
Beachables recently opened a second store in downtown Charleston in the historic King Street shopping district. “We look forward to engaging our newest neighbors and identifying new opportunities to contribute,” Watters says.
