Magazine awarded three regional awards by the professional association for business publications.

Seaside Retailer magazine has been recognized by the American Society of Business Publication Editors with three regional AZBEE Awards of Excellence. ASBPE is the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors and designers employed in business, trade, and specialty press.

Seaside Retailer, based in Medina, Ohio, was awarded a regional Silver Award for Content and regional Silver and Bronze awards for Design from the Heartland Chapter.

Winners of AZBEE awards represent the best of B2B publishing. Seaside Retailer was among dozens of magazines in various industry sectors recognized by these awards.

The Silver Award for Content was in the Editor’s Letter category. The Editor’s Letters are written by Kristin Ely, executive editor and conference director. The category description is as follows: “A good editor's letter provides readers with an engaging entry point to the magazine, often through personal observations or anecdotes. Editor's letters are typically not meant to be persuasive, like editorials. However, good ones offer insight and context into a topic addressed in the issue, piquing readers' desire to read the associated articles.”

“The Editor’s Letter is an important part of each issue. Each message is crafted in a way that speaks directly to readers and connects them with the content of the magazine,” says Ely. “This recognition by ASBPE means Seaside Retailer is accomplishing this goal.”

In the Design category, the Silver award was for the Feature Article Design category, which recognizes design that uses quality images, graphics and typography to complement the content of an entire article. Karen Carr, Publisher and Creative Director of Seaside Retailer was recognized for the feature design of the article, “Going Further for the Planet,” which appeared in the March/April 2021 issue.

Carr was also recognized in the Magazine Design category, which is judged for clear visual hierarchy and design that serves the content and presents it clearly. How well the design quickly conveys important news is also factored into the judging. Judges also consider effective use of white space, color, photography, illustration, typography, visual storytelling and infographics.

“We are thrilled that our editorial and design was recognized by our industry peers with three regional AZBEE Awards of Excellence,” says Karen Carr, Seaside Retailer publisher and creative director. “Beach, coastal and nautical retailers have a need for a quality magazine with relevant content and strong visual design, and Seaside Retailer delivers.”
