How to build a million-dollar inventory plan.![]() If I had to rebuild my store from scratch tomorrow, I would start by looking at cash flow. Building cash confidence makes everything easier in retail. But cash flow is only one piece to building a million-dollar store. Second on my list is developing an inventory plan.Make a planWhen trying to come up with a million-dollar inventory plan, here are seven things I would do:
For a coastal store, a few of these points are worth slowing down for. "Curate inventory with intention, choosing every piece the same way you choose a guest for dinner."Curate with intentionChoosing what goes on your shelves matters more when your customer is on vacation. Tourists aren’t comparing your prices to five other stores in town. They’re looking for a shop that feels like it was put together just for this trip.Protect fast sellersEvery store has a short list of pieces that sell no matter the week. For seasonal stores, the stakes are higher.Check your fast sellers weekly during peak season, not monthly. Running out of a bestselling item during your busiest six weeks doesn’t just cost you that sale; it costs you the customer who won’t be back until next summer. Plan markdowns earlyIf you wait until the season ends to mark something down, you risk competing with every other store’s clearance rack at the same time. A small, early markdown in week six almost always moves more products and protects margin more than a deep cut in week 12.None of these practices are complicated. Get these seven things right and you will eventually buy less, sell more of what matters and free up the cash that carries your store the whole year.
