Prep for the summer rush

Prep now for the summer rush.

January and February may bring less foot traffic, but for savvy seaside retailers, the slow months offer the perfect opportunity to prepare for the summer rush.

Laying the groundwork now — through planning, ordering and merchandising — ensures you’re not scrambling when your busiest season arrives.

Check inventory

Use the winter lull to review last season’s sales. Begin clearing out slow sellers and discontinued seasonal items to make room for fresh summer inventory.

"A thoughtful, polished presentation sets the tone for a successful and profitable summer season."

Now is a great time to reach out to your key vendors to preview their spring/summer lines. Place orders early for high-turnover categories to ensure you’re stocked for busy season. Also, consider revisiting terms with local makers who may need more lead time.

A visual refresh

Winter is also the best time to elevate your in-store experience, starting with visual merchandising. Consider updating focal zones like your front entrance, key walls and feature tables. These areas can act as storytelling platforms.

Once you have your visual merchandising plans in place, create a visual calendar to rotate displays regularly every few weeks leading up to summer.

Light it up

Lighting is often overlooked but makes a huge difference in visual merchandising. Use spotlights to draw attention to key items.

Don’t forget about window displays, even during slow months. These should always reflect a curated, fresh assortment that teases what’s in store and what’s coming.

From reviewing inventory to refreshing visual displays, early preparation allows seaside retailers to hit the ground running when the crowds return. A thoughtful, polished presentation sets the tone for a successful and profitable summer season.
